As the season gets underway, the Eaton High School tennis team is already showing growth and determination on the court. As of Apr. 9, the Reds have fought for every match leaving Maddie Smith and Trinity Salburg undefeated.
So far, players say the team has already improved compared to last year. With more experience and better communication, the team is working to become more confident during matches. Senior Harley Forster said, “We are all closer with one another this year and taking it much more seriously than last season.”
Practices have been an important part of that improvement. The team spends time working on consistency, serves, and staying mentally focused during long matches. Tennis is both a physical and mental sport, and players say staying calm under pressure is one of the biggest challenges. Forster said, “Our focus has been expanding our skills and getting better day by day as a team.”
Several players have already stood out this season for their effort and performance. Forster has shown strong skills in her forehand play, helping her stay competitive in close matches. “I have been working hard during practice while still having fun with my team. We practice different skills everyday at practice and learn the proper techniques to become a successful team,” she said.
Another player making an impact is junior Zoey Gustafson, who has helped support teammates and keep energy high during matches and practices. Gustafson said, “I step into a leadership role in tennis by being honest about the calls I make.”
An important moment from this season so far has been overcoming difficulties from opposing coaches.. Gustafson said, “The most defining moment this far has been working past issues with other coaches from different schools.”
Team chemistry has also been a big factor in the team’s progress. Players say they feel more connected this year, which helps them stay positive and support each other during matches. Forster said, “Since it’s my senior year I want to have fun, play loose, and go all out for my team. Knowing that I have nothing to lose and my teammates are right beside me makes the environment of tennis positive.”
Unlike some other sports, tennis can feel more individual, but the Eaton team emphasizes supporting each other on and off the court. Whether it’s cheering during matches or helping each other improve in practice, players say teamwork still plays a big role.
As the season continues, the team is looking forward to upcoming matches and more opportunities to improve. With each match, they are gaining more experience and confidence. Over all, the Eaton tennis team is focused on growth, effort, and working together. While wins and losses matter, the team’s main goal is to keep improving and make a statement this season.
