One of the team’s biggest strengths this year has been its balance. Different players stepped up each game, making the Lady Reds difficult to defend. Courtney Steinkamp (27) led the team with 26.2 points per game and also led in rebounds and steals, showing her impact on both ends of the floor. Saryiah Gaona (26) averaged 3.8 assists per game, highlighting the team’s ability to share the ball and trust one another. Their defense stood out in a 61–8 win over Valley High School on Jan. 30, where they held their opponent to just eight points.
The Lady Reds have proven they can compete with anyone they face. Whether playing a top team in the league or someone lower in the standings, they brought the same effort every time. Eaton defeated Weld Central 57–26 in a strong team performance on Feb. 13, and earned a 39-25 win over Coal Ridge on Mar. 6, where everyone contributed. Even in tough losses, such as a close 25-29 game on Feb. 20, against Wiggins and a 48–64 loss to University on Feb. 10, the team has used this as motivation to improve.
Hayden Annand (26) said, “We have had lots of ups and downs, but that is all a part of the process.”
Leadership from the upperclassmen has played a key role in the team’s growth this season. Reagan Lopez (26) explained how she stepped into that responsibility. “As an upperclassman, I’ve had to get out of my comfort zone to help and talk to the younger girls and always put in my full effort, knowing they are watching me and will follow in my footsteps,” Lopez said.
Annand also emphasized the importance of encouragement. “As an upperclassman I have really tried to lead the way by being as encouraging as possible. I love to cheer my teammates on and I want to encourage others to do the same. I try to be a leader when I can, and I truly believe I can do that through bringing my teammates up,” she said.
New head coach Dakota Patton introduced new energy and expectations to the program. “The new coaching has been an interesting experience and something that has taken adjusting and getting used to.” Annand said “The coaches have good leadership advice and bring good energy, which is always fun to have.”
Lopez agreed that the coaching staff has made a difference. “Our new coach has made a big impact on us and has helped our team change physically and mentally about basketball. He has pushed us and helped us find who we are as people and players,” she said.
On Mar. 7, the Lady Reds closed out their season with a hard fought game against Holy Family. The girls came out strong and held a lead of 31-18 at half time. However Holy Family gained the momentum in the second half and pulled ahead to win 52-46.
The team finished their season with 13 wins overall and 12 losses. Although the season ended with a loss, Eaton’s determination and hard work reflects the growth of the team this season.
