Eaton’s football team has started the 2024 season off on a rough page. From losing their first two games, to huge injuries happening on the team, their season isn’t going too well. Connor Davey(25), the team’s quarterback for the last two years, thinks he tore his ACL and could possibly be out for both his football and basketball season. During their game against The Classical Academy, Davey made one wrong movement that ended his senior season.
“I was running out of the pocket and planted to cut the other way and I heard a pop and fell,” said Davey.
The football team is trying their best to replace Davey. The only bonus is that all this chaos happened in the beginning of the season, so they still have time before playoffs to find someone to fill in the role.
Most of the players believed that Andrew Loyd, a junior at Eaton High School, is going to step into the role. Loyd got the opportunity to play quarterback in Eaton football’s first home game against Pueblo Central. Eaton lost 7-32. Loyd had 110 passing yards that game. The real question everyone keeps asking is if Loyd is going to hold the spot of quarterback or not.
“I think Loyd deserves to fill my spot because he is an athlete and has good knowledge of the game,” said Davey.
Sophomore Owen Ochsner is the JV quarterback, and is supposed to be the backup in case of emergencies. However, Ochsner wasn’t put on the field and Loyd was taken from his original position as defensive tackle and wide receiver. A lot of talk has been going through the locker room and hallways at school about how Loyd hasn’t played quarterback since his freshman year on the freshman team.
Loyd said, “Davey got hurt and our coaches asked if I would play it again.”
Loyd took the opportunity and has been putting in work inside and outside of practice to try and get used to playing quarterback.
This season has been a great learning opportunity for both the players and the coaches on how to work around things. This includes Davey’s injury and a new quarterback stepping into his role. Eaton football’s next game is an away game against Fort Morgan, on Sept. 27.
