The 2021 baseball State Champions are back this spring and are ready for their regular season. Boys Baseball started off their season last Saturday against the Mountain View Lions. The Reds defeated the Lions 14-4. The boys have been eager to get back onto the field after training in the aux gym due to weather conditions and waiting for the basketball season to end. Spring sports in Colorado can be a struggle to work around considering the unpredictability of the weather. Thankfully, the sun was shining on Saturday and the boys took it to their advantage. Starting off pitching for the Reds was Mitch Haythorn (24) and let zero runs score for the Lions. Coming in to finish off the game was Jared McCormack (22) and secured the 14-4 win for the Reds. Behind home plate Gunnar Duncan (24) and Ryder True (23) caught, while having a secure defense in front of them the infield as the fielding percentage was .933%. Senior Ben Richter (22) got the sticks going for the Reds as he batted .800% with two RBIs and scored two of the 14 runs.

After the game, the team held their fundraiser to help support the program. The fundraiser was called the “Hit A Thon” and each player had to get pledges or a flat donation for the cause. The boys got five soft toss balls to hit it as far as they could and the farthest hit would be eligible for the pledge money. For example, someone could donate 30 cents per foot and if someone hit it 300 feet, that person would owe 60 dollars. The “Hit A Thon” was a successful fundraiser as the community came together to support the boys and the beginning of their season. Tate Smith (23) said, ” I’m just excited to get going. It’s always fun to be back out on the field and the goal is always to win another state championship so that’s what we are going to continue to work for”. After another game being postponed due to weather the boys are now two games behind schedule.

The next game is on Thursday Mar. 24th against the Brush Beetdiggers. In order to stay updated on the season, tune into Eaton RedInk for weekly updates.
