Skiing and snowboarding are universal sports that are done all around the world. There are many different things you need for skiing or snowboarding, including boots, skis or a snowboard, warm clothing, but above all, you need snow.
The United States is in the middle of winter, and Ranges around the nation are very limited on snow. While there is snow on the ground and enough to ski, there’s not much fresh powder snow. With not much snow on the hills, things like rocks are sticking up all around. While you can ski over rock, they create a threat to skiers and snowboarders combined, causing them to potentially lose control and crash or fall. Even if they don’t fall, they still tear up the skis and snowboards bottom side. Noah Manguso, a sophomore at Eaton High School, said, “Skiing sucks this season, and we are in desperate need of [snow] for this summer to prevent forest fires,” which places like Colorado are very dry with a high risk of fires.
Now, the cold is plentiful in the States, with Orlando, Florida, being colder than Jeanneu, Alaska, according to keynews.com. This cold comes from an “Arctic Blast” that has hit the United States. While this “blast” has been cold, it hasn’t really brought any snow.
Skiing and snowboarding in the States might not be worth it, but Japan and France have not seen any shortage of snow, with Chamonix, a very popular French ski resort, getting up to just over 16 meters for each individual one of the past years, according to Snowtrex. Powderhounds states that Japan’s ski resorts have gotten 10 to 20 meters of snow.
According to travelandleisure.com, it’s cheaper to travel and go skiing in France than it is to travel and ski in Colorado. The estimated total cost to go skiing in Vail, Colorado, comes to about $6,900, and going to Courchevel, France, skiing costs about $6,650. These prices include plane tickets, transportation via Uber, a five-day adult lift ticket, rentals, and lodging. Both of these costs can be cut a little ithe skierer or snowboarder brings their own equipment. These costs don’t mention anything about food or drinks, though.
Ski resorts do have snow makers, but they normally run those before snow falls so that all the snow that falls ends up sticking to the ground and doesn’t melt.
While skiing and snowboarding are still possible and fun, it’s definitely not the same as years before due to the snow deficit.
