With the new year underway, January has presented the U.S. with reports of scandals, which are believed to be extending back throughout the past decade. In this fraud investigation, the truth was unveiled that the state allocated government funds to run food banks, childcare centers, and aid those in need within Minnesota as a cover up. Rather than funding these needs, the organization leaders fraudulently obtained the money. Instead of using the government-funded money for good, fraudulent organization leaders used the money for their own needs; such as luxury goods.
As this investigation continues, these scandals have already led to many convictions, prosecutions and will most likely lead to more as evidence is revealed. According to the white house instagram, as of now 98 defendants are charged, 64 convictions are secured, 1,750+ subpoenas are issued, and 130 federal search warrants are executed. Many of these fraudulent cases are being linked to the period of the Biden administration. Tim Walz’s long-standing role in Minnesota politics since 2006, combined with his position as Kamala Harris’s running mate in the 2024 election, has led some Americans to question potential connections.Since many of these scandals have been designated to the time of the Biden Administration, many begin to wonder what was truly going on in Minnesota during those four years. To add to this speculation, Tim Walz announced he has decided to drop his bid for a third term as Minnesota governor.
As this case is still growing in evidence, the American people are still unaware of the full amount of money that was stolen. The justice department is working to collect more evidence and bring light to these cases. As they continue to work with Minnesota state officials, they have estimated the total amount of fraud could extend to billions of dollars per the evidence collected so far in the investigation.
Combining the fraud in Minnesota and the recent immigration issues in Minneapolis, the state of Minnesota has experienced criticism of the condition of the state. Governor Tim Walz didn’t begin to receive criticism just in recent months; he has been questioned by politicians and the public for many years as the leader of Minnesota, Connecting that Walz hasn’t done enough to prevent fraud in the state of Minnesota, according to the state’s Republicans. As the two political parties tend to have vast disagreements on such matters, Minnesota’s 5th district Rep, Ilhan Omar, had her own take on the fraud in her state.
Due to the fraud multiple day care centers have been forced to close down for the time being, impacting innocent Minnesota locals, who were depending on these day care facilities. In the CBS News Article, “Rep. Ilhan Omar says federal probe into Minnesota’s welfare fraud is ‘creating confusion and chaos’” by Graham Kates, Rep. Ilhan Omar said, “There is no reason for them to use this level of rhetoric. There is no reason for them to fully stop these programs, funding these programs,” Omar said. “The only reason they are doing that is for PR purposes. And it is harming our state. It is harming my constituents.”
As Americans continue to wonder about the background of these programs, Omar states there is no reason for all programs to be shut down. But as evidence continues to be released, speculation continues to grow. The true research that needs to be done is how the day cares went unnoticed and unchecked by government entities that are supposed to be in charge of such matters. As more evidence is released accountability is not being taken and rather than trying to solve the issue, Minnesota’s officials are downplaying the fraud, pointing out that these programs don’t need to be fully stopped. If accountability isn’t being taken and officials are overlooking the bigger picture of this fraud, Minnesota could continue to face criticism and public scrutiny.
EHS teacher Amy Ross said, “You would think there would be some oversight. If these actions aren’t technically legal or didn’t follow the parameters that were set, then where is the agency that’s supposed to be responsible? That’s the question many people are asking. You can frame it as Democrats versus Republicans, but at its core, it’s really about who is actually in charge of where taxpayers’ money is going.”
The state oversight in Minnesota is in charge of seeing specifically where tax payers money is going. State bodies such as the Office of the State Auditor (OSA), and Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) are supposed to be in charge of association with taxpayers money. This is something Americans are urged to look into as society has been given limited information by the Minnesota Politicians of who should be monitoring where the money was going. Tim Walz and his colleagues have little to say as evidence unravels, avoiding taking a comprehensive look into who is in charge of this scandal.
In the Fox News article “Trump slams Walz and Newsom as ‘Crooked Governors,’ asserting their states are awash with fraud,” by Alex Nitzberg, President Donald J. Trump said, “Much of the Minnesota Fraud, up to 90%, is caused by people that came into our country, illegally, from Somalia.”
Trump’s side is a point of view some of the people of this nation are tending to agree with. As there is no specific evidence to back this up, many factors could be attributed to people thinking this claim could be true. Minnesota’s recent interactions with immigration and ICE as well as Rep. Ilhan Omar being from Somalia herself are leading some Americans to consider Trump’s claim to be a possibility. The large Somali population that makes up Minnesota are connected to the enforcement operation by federal officials. As these claims evoke thoughts in Americans’ heads, only time and evidence will allow the American people to know the truth behind this case of fraud in Minnesota.
Nick Shirley is a conservative YouTuber classified as an independent journalist that has been speaking out about the claims Trump has brought to light. He said in one of his videos, “The Somalians have figured out exactly the perfect plan as to how to scam Minnesota taxpayers out of their money. They are banking on this making millions of dollars and the government here in Minnesota is too lazy to go and check it out and to see if there’s even clients living in these homes.”
As Shirley is a magazine centered independent journalist, and many of his videos are right-winged, CNN brought it to their attention to investigate Shirley’s claims. CNN reporter Whitney Wilde approached Shirley to look into the claims for herself in Minnesota. She questioned his statement, asking why these day cares were locked and led him to her opinion that all day cares should be locked. Shirley fired back with the fact that when trying to call the number on the door to try and enroll a child, no information is given. The two ventured back and forth as they discussed the validity of Shirley’s claim, which led Wilde to check it out for herself, so she began calling the day cares that Shirley had claimed to be fraudulent. Only one day care answered and said they are a legitimate business. As Wilde pointed this out in a segment on CNN, reporters of the channel later in the segment continued to criticize the claim of Shirley. The segment that featured the “Group Chat” of CNN discussed their opinion on the topic of Shirley’s claim.
In the Group Chat segment CNN host Sarah Fischer said, “The reason why I think Shirley’s post has gone viral amongst some of the conservative community is because Minnesota is a politically convenient target, not just for the president, but for the party.”
As their conversation continued CNN host Antoine Seawright said, “So this has become politically convenient in this current seeing this by this administration to make this a right wing red meet racial talking point about the Somalians and of course, picking on Tim Walz. At the end of the day, I don’t think anyone wants to run away from accountability, particularly Tim Walz who is up for re-election in the state next year.” However, Tim Walz has decided to end his bid for a third term as the Minnesota Governor. In an article published by PBS titled “Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz won’t run for a third term,” Walz said, “I can’t give a political campaign my all” after what he described as an “extraordinarily difficult year for our state.”
This quote by Walz makes Seawright’s statement seem debatable due to the fact Walz has decided not to run for re-election in the upcoming year. With this decision, it makes Americans question his accountability concerning the fraud in Minnesota, and his responsibility in the current state of Minnesota. In addition to him deciding to conclude his running for a third term, it has recently been announced that Walz, along with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, are being investigated by the Department of Justice (DOJ). The investigation is examining if Walz and Frey improperly impeded or interfered with federal immigration enforcement operations. Walz and Frey have publicly expressed their opinion on the immigration crackdown in Minnesota, and have highly criticized federal agents. The DOJ is further looking at whether those comments and statements could amount to impeding federal law enforcement, rather than simple disagreement over Trump’s policy.
In CBS News article, “DOJ investigating Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over alleged conspiracy to impede immigration agents,” Montoya-Galvez et. al. wrote, “Walz and Frey, both Democrats, have vocally denounced the federal deployment to the Twin Cities, accusing federal agents of creating chaos and undermining public safety through aggressive tactics.”
As this investigation is very controversial for Republicans and Democrats, the American people are just awaiting answers. The first weeks of the new year have been filled with many events and the state of Minnesota is one of the main topics circulating national news. As Americans reach topics that are seen to be controversial, society continues to question what is truly happening with the fraud in Minnesota.
CNN host Terry said, “This is not about Somalians. I think the reason that it’s being focused on the Somalis is because they’re the ones committing it. We took these people in as refugees, and it looks like there’s billions and billions of dollars in scam. So hopefully we can get some convictions here and get some justice because people need this money. People need help with day care and no one should be scammed, especially taxpayers.”
At the end of the day reaching accountability by Minnesota officials is something that needs to be done. Taxpayers money is being stolen and given to entities the Americans can’t see records of. The real question at hand is who in Minnesota is keeping track of this money, and when will Americans hear the truth. Whether this fraud is old news or not, why is fraud still happening within Minnesota? As these investigations continue, all the Americans can do is hope for transparency from all officials and hope for the truth to unfold.
