Eaton High School is launching a new class called Access this fall, bringing major changes to the school’s daily schedule and student support system. The class is part of the school’s plan to give students more time for learning, help, and building real-world skills.
The Access class is available to students in multiple grade levels. It will take place during the school day and is designed to help students stay on track with their classes. During this time, students can meet with teachers, work on assignments, or get extra help.
This new course connects to the recently introduced Access schedule, which replaced the school’s old Course Access Time (CAT). The updated schedule gives teachers time to work with students one-on-one or in small groups. Teachers can also request students to come in for extra support when needed.
Principal Jessica Grable says the new class is an important step toward making school more helpful and flexible for students. “Our goal is to equip students with not only academic knowledge but practical skills that they can apply in the real world,” Grable said. “We’re very excited to see how this course enriches our students’ learning experiences.”
The Access course was created after listening to feedback from students and teachers. School leaders also studied what other schools are doing and what skills today’s students need for future jobs or college. The goal is to make school time more useful and give students more control over their learning.
In the new course, students won’t just sit through regular lessons. They will also take part in hands-on projects and activities that help build real-life skills. Some may use the time to finish classwork, while others might work on personal goals or learn something new.
Another goal of the Access class is to strengthen the connection between students and teachers. It gives both sides more chances to talk, share ideas, and work together in a low-pressure setting. Freshman Emerald Crowe said, “ I have loved getting to have a time to get everything done. We had ‘Reds Hour’ in middle school that was somewhat similar but, this has just taken so much stress of being a freshman and it has made me a lot happier knowing I always have time to get help.” The school hopes this will lead to better communication and stronger relationships.
Eaton High School staff believe the Access course will be an important part of the school’s future. It supports the school’s mission to prepare students for life after graduation, whether that means going to college, learning a trade, or starting a job.
As the school year begins, students, teachers, and families are watching closely to see how this new class will help make learning more personal, meaningful, and successful.
