At EHS, there are typically three different dances throughout the year: Homecoming, Prom, and traditionally, MORP. This year, the Student Council decided to change up the tradition and have a Sadie Hawkins Dance instead of MORP.
Many schools around Eaton have an annual Sadie Hawkins dance. It’s a type of dance where instead of boys asking girls to the dance, the girls ask the boys which adds a twist to the type of dance and creates it to be more fun. This dance also brings a lot of attention because it is not restricted to certain grades and the underclassmen are allowed to go.
The Sadie Hawkins dance usually has a theme or dress code attached. This year, EHS is going with the red carpet theme and a formal dress code.
Sophomore class president, Delaney Reuter said, “I’m excited about the Sadie Hawkins dance. We haven’t had a dance or an event as a school in a while so this will be a fun event. Plus, dances are always fun to go to. This idea has been in the works since right after Homecoming.
We knew that we wanted to rebrand the dance since it hasn’t been well attended in the past years. After hearing that other schools usually do a Sadies dance, we decided to try that. I would really like to continue this tradition. I think dances are really fun and we should have more than just Homecoming and prom. We landed on the red carpet theme this year because we thought it would go well with Valentine’s coming up.” The dance will occur right before the Valentine’s holiday.
The Sadie Hawkins dance has been around for almost a century. The name came from a comic strip originated by AI Capps and the tradition began after that. With this year being EHS’s first year to try out the dance, many hope that it can become a tradition after all goes well.
STUCO advisor, Justice Aleman said, “I feel a little nervous. It’s the first time STUCO has hosted a Sadie Hawkins and we are just trying to get prepared for everything. We have spent a couple of weeks planning, which the majority of the STUCO kids did. I want to see how the dance goes to determine if it’s worthwhile. Whatever makes the student body happy is what STUCO will do in the end.”
In past years, many students have hoped for EHS to host a Sadie Hawkins dance, so this year will be the year to begin and hopefully continue.
As EHS approaches the upcoming dance, students are very excited and planning on ideas to ask for their dates. Most are hoping the dance will be fun and the tradition can begin and continue. Students can purchase pre-sale tickets during lunch and select advising times. Tickets are 10$ a person and 15$ for duos.
