Pyramid of Broken Bodies

Netflix docuseries depicts reality of collegiate level cheerleading

“Cheer is built on a pyramid of broken bodies.” ‘Cheer’, a Netflix Original Series documented Navarro College Cheer Team, a 14-time nationally ranked Texas team.

By giving insight to college students’ lives, ‘Cheer’ introduces viewers to admirable characters. Six athletes steal the show, each having unique back stories. While facing a plethora of injuries in season, Navarro cheerleaders come from broken homes and family dynamics.

Gabi Butler, Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, Jerry Harris, and Mackenzie Sherburn are all under the direction of a mother-like figure and cheer coach Monica Aldama. Aldama’s coaching technique trains young adults to set the bar high.

The team has reached its success because of the hardworking students that make up the 40-member program. Navarro College Cheer puts an emphasis on skills the athletes can utilize after college. This is especially important in character development and learning leadership through school involvement.
