Eaton girls prepare for new season

Seniors Sydney Booth and Michaela Hill hold Bailie Duncan and Gracie Schreiber on their backs.

Basketball season comes around again, and the girls team prepares for another season of triumph.

Last year the girls ended their season 18-6 and are ready to come back for more. Even though there are only four seniors on the court this year, head coach Todd Hernandez said, “Much of the varsity roster returns from last year, so I feel that our level of experience will be strong.”

The girls are hoping to win some titles to put on the gym wall, by defeating a team that has served them two defeats in a row. Gracie Schreiber (19) said, “ Well the last two years we’ve lost to the same team, CSCS, in regionals. I am really excited to go further this year with the girls. We definitely have the potential and I can’t wait to see what we do with it.”

Last year the girls scored a total of 1,203 points throught the season, which was almost 400 points above the points scored against.

The first game of the season approaches quickly, as they prepare to face Gunnison on Thursaday Nov. 29 for a home game. Their greatest strength this year is that they have a variety for different players. There are a lot of strong posts, quick guards, and shooters. This years strongest players are the seniors as three out of the four seniors are starters. Sydney Booth (19) is a starter this year as she comes back from an injury. She is now clear from a ACL surgery repair and is ready to suit up for another season. Michaela Hill (19) finished her season last year with an average of 6 points scored per game, while Bailie Duncan (19) averaged 10 points per game and 4 rebounds. Hill said, “I really love how this team’s athletisisum is spreaded out and it it not just on one stand out player. We all have our own talents and it tends to always bring out the best in each other.”

A strong player on the team, Nakaiya Kuskie (21) was a swinger last year as a freshman playing between JV and varsity games, but this year she is a starter because of her outstanding three point shooting ability. Kuskie said, “It was my goal coming in freshman year. I wanted to suit up and play varsity. After last year, I told myself that I was going to start this year. So everything I’ve been doing all summer [basketball training] was all worth it when one day of practice I heard I was starting.

Hernadez said, “As always we will look to be aggressive on both ends of the floor, minimize mistakes, and dictate the tempo of the game.”
