Petition begins at Eaton High School to recite the pledge
By Dayana Pena:
Gavin Huckaby (20) started a petition to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the day during announcements. Huckaby said, “I didn’t like how we don’t say the pledge in high school. We have to say it because it respects our flag, its history, all those patriots who fought and died in all the wars for the country.”
Students in the freshman class would stand in the mornings during announcements to say the pledge. According to Huckaby students in his class were used to standing up at 8 a.m. everyday in middle school, but after a pause they realized that there wasn’t a moment to pledge to the flag.
Maddie Brummet (19) said, “I think it’s cool what Gavin is doing and I really think it will be a very impactful change to the high school. Because he is a freshman, it really shows that anyone can make a difference.”
According to Brummet, many incoming students would not be up for the task of standing up for a controversial topic and cause, but Huckaby has been very brave for doing it; and although he is new to the high school, Huckaby thinks it’s quite alright since many people agree with him and his idea.
