Overalls are not overrated. The new sleek overalls of today have a completely transformed from their previously baggy appearances. Basically, overalls are skinny jeans for your entire body, except in the summer, when overall shorts are a welcome rendition to the classic look. Overalls have even morphed into dresses and skirts, which are a bit more edgy. It all began in 1750, when overalls were first introduced in America as a practical clothing item for physical labor. Their sensibility became noted and they were worn again in 1776-the American Revolution-in military uniforms. Throughout the 1800s, overalls were worn by working civilians. In the 1930s, overalls became a symbol of the working class in the Great Depression. However, it was not until the 1960s and 70s that overalls became a fashion icon. People wore them baggy and sometimes with one strap off. Legendary hip-hop artist Mick Jagger even wore overalls but with only one strap for extra “coolness.” In the 1990s, overalls returned yet again but still with a looser fit than the current bibs. Friends characters Monica, Rachel and Phoebe endorsed the trend on their hit TV show. In 2012, Justin Bieber shook hands with the Canadian prime minister in a pair of overalls with one strap. Bieber’s timing might have been questionable but his overalls were right on. Now, overalls have returned once more in possibly their most glorious state yet. Depending on the person, overalls can be chic and dressed up, cute and casual, or even have a hipster flair. It is okay if you are too timid to try the overall trend right now, bibs are destined to return in 10 to 15 years in another variation of the original look.
