The yearbook and newspaper staffs brought home a total of four awards at the Colorado Student Media Association (CSMA) Journalism Day (J-Day) at Colorado State University on Oct. 8. The Eaton Red Ink won Best of Show–first place–in small school websites and achieved the second highest recognition, Award of Commendation, for the 2014-15 print paper. The yearbook staff won Best of Show for their best three photos and captions submitted; also, the yearbook staff took home an All Colorado award, the highest ranking for the 2015 Eatonian yearbook. Newspaper Adviser Deirdre Jones said, “this year my goal was to just have the kids tell stories they were passionate about and stop trying to compete with big schools who are so far advanced technology. So I entered us in Best of Show and I was not expecting much. When we won first place, I was overwhelmed and delighted. I could just weep because these kids have done such a good job.” Newspaper Sports Editor Darius Duran agreed with Jones. He said, “This was a big achievement for the newspaper, and it will obviously push us. It’s a big victory for all of America when Eaton can win.” The yearbook staff was equally as excited for their awards. Yearbook Adviser Merri Kirby said, “I felt like a proud mama duck and like our efforts were being rewarded for a job well done.” Yearbook Co-Editor-in-Chief Jayde Contreras recalled waiting for the results. She said, “I just remember sitting before the award and how it took so long. I was shaking and my stomach was flipping. As soon as [the announcer] said second place winner, I was like we either did really good or really bad. But then he said [the Eatonian] for first place and [Karalee and I] looked at each other, jumped up and started screaming.” Similarly, newspaper Editor-in-Chief and yearbook Co-Editor-in-Chief Karalee Kothe said, “I am so proud of both of our staffs because each individual person contributed to the awards. It feels great to get recognition for all of our hard work. I am honored to be on both staffs of amazing people and amazing advisers.”
