Journalists for the Red Ink were awarded 12 Journalism Excellence Awards for Newspaper Class I-up to 849 students- in the Best of Colorado Contest for 2015. Four first-place awards were given by the Colorado High School Press Association for the 2014-15 school year, two second-place, five third-place and one honorable mention.
Taking first place were Rae Wood and Karalee Kothe for photo illustration for their cover of Mark and Shelby Naill demonstrating technology “back then” and now. Kothe also won a first place for her Lifestyle Coverage of the ALS fundraiser, and her accompanying photo took a third place. Kaci Jurgensmeier won first for her Lifestyle Feature of “Skating on Concrete,” and Darius Duran took a first place for Sports Column
Two second place awards were given to Amy Phillips for her critical review of Christmas gifts and Karalee Kothe for her General Column of clothing “Trends we are seeing.”
Amy Phillips and Lydia Bradley garnered a third-place award for their Facing-Page Design of the Eaton Mascot. Rae Wood took a third for her News Photo and Kaci Jurgensmeier took two third-place finishes for Breaking News Coverage of AP classes giving way to Dual Enrollment and a Photo Essay of the “Taste of Eaton.”
The students received their awards the same night as their induction to Quill and Scroll on Wednesday May 6.
