The Newspaper staff attended the National High School Journalism Convention on April 16 and 17. Students Kaci Jurgensmeier (16), Sarah Jakel (17), Mason Koehn (18), Rae Brown (15) and adviser Deirdre Jones toured the Denver Center for Performing Arts where they went behind the scenes and saw costumes, masks, furniture and more. Koehn said, “It was really cool how they showed us all the different sections of the performing arts center, including a sewing section, a mask section, and a costume section.” The tour was definitely Jurgensmeier’s favorite part of the field trip. She said, “It was incredible because it’s not one of those things that you see everyday. I got especially excited about it because I am in theatre, and to be able to see the next level of theatre was a great experience, and the best part of the trip.” That night, the group attended the keynote speaker, which entailed three journalists sharing what it is like to go against opposition, but to publish the story anyways. The speakers enforced it is their right to write stories because the truth must be told. The second day, the Eaton group explored the convention and went to college booths. Also, they attended lessons to basic editing, team work, and more. Koehn said the classes were “pretty cool.” They spent the rest of the day enjoying downtown Denver before heading home. Overall, Jakel said, “The convention was something I’ve never done before. It was such a different experience to see how many high schoolers are involved in journalism, I had no idea how many kids were really into it and it was inspiring.”
