UPDATE: Eaton Area Recreation Center (5A) passed on the November 4 ballot with a 69.4 percent in favor of the Rec Center. Ballot issues 5B passed with a 53.1 percent, 5C with a 56.3 percent, and 5D with a 55 percent. Robin A. Moser and Julie Kennedy were voted to be on the board of directors for two years. Todd Richards, Nina Lewis and Brandon Rohn will serve four-year terms.
Eaton Area Recreation Committee is working hard in hopes of opening a Recreational Center that would include multiple pools, volleyball and basketball courts, indoor track, exercise rooms, banquet rooms, catering kitchen, performance stage, athletic fields, walking paths, picnic areas, concessions, and patios. The Rec Center would be located on a parcel of land west of Cherry Avenue between Third Street and Fifth Streets by WCR 35. The price of the rec center is estimated to be 6.92 million. Registered voters will be able to vote “yes” or “no” for a rec center on the November Ballot. Voting “yes” on 5A, 5B, 5C, and 5D will gain the Eaton District a new recreation center. On her facebook page, Nina Lewis, a Recreational Committee member, posts that Eaton Schools have been cutting practice times to accommodate everyone (see her post below). Eaton has few places to watch the younger community perform. Eaton has grown too big for what room we have now and that is why the town of Eaton needs a rec center. The Town of Eaton doesn’t own a large stage, pools, or athletic fields or courts that aren’t owned by the school district. These new courts, rooms, pools, and the stage would have top-of-the line sound scoreboards and sound systems. The new recreation center would let the current rec center downtown expand on the daily classes that the rec center offers. When asked his opinion about the possibility of the new rec center, Steve Longwell, Eaton High School’s Athletic Director, was all for the new possibility, ‘I truly believe that a recreation center is needed in our community. As we continue to grow we are running out of space for teams to practice and play games. It also affords our community an opportunity to swim, workout, etc.. without having to go to Greeley.’
Lewis posts on facebook: “Why not Eaton? We are facility locked right now-our facilities are used from 5:30 am to 10 pm on a regular basis. Practice times have been cut to accommodate all teams, we do not have room for extra events, can’t add to programming- leaving out programs for our teens and adults and have very few places we can hold meetings, have celebrations or just gather! As of know our elementary schools do not have a place to hold their holiday music concerts-(by the way we have all had to travel to Greeley over the past few years to watch our kids perform-Union Colony is booked this year). We continue to grow- we continue to add members to our community and we continue to lack the space to take care of the community. The time is now- the day is today- please vote for this very important project that will allow us to provide opportunities for our community and surrounding areas!!”
