Baseball season for the Eaton Reds is highly anticipated because of the team’s reputation. After a year since winning the State Championships for a fourth time in a row, and holding a record of 69 wins, the Reds have begun to take the field and prepare for another season.
The EHS baseball players have very high expectations to start this season off. The team’s win streak is still alive, and it is up to this year’s team to continue that.
It is expected that this year’s lineup will consist of new faces as many key figures of last year’s team have graduated and moved on to play baseball at the next level. However, the 2025 high school team also has a few committed players of their own.
Gunnar Garrison (26), Reds’ pitcher, has made his commitment to Brigham Young University, and Cooper Nider (25), Reds’ shortstop, has made his ties with Chandler Gilbert University. There are only two returning seniors on the varsity team, and with this being their last season playing for EHS baseball, a large part of responsibility is on them to lead this team to continued success. Nider said, “As a leader I need to be a role model to everyone with my actions and my words to provide everyone on the team with someone to count on and look up to.”
Patiently awaiting practices to officially start on Feb. 24, players have been attending open gym practices, and have been working on their skills on their own time as well. Dedication is a trait that is likely to be found in each of the baseball players wanting to secure their varsity position.
With certain position players graduating and some injuries on the team, some players may have to take on new positions this year, or younger players will come up to take the roles. Junior Everett Edinger has established himself as a reliable catcher, but recently had surgery and will not be seen behind the plate to start this season off. The Reds will need to scope out a player with the same work ethic to fill the role behind the plate. “I think it’s going to be easy to fill the spots this year that we lost from last year since we have some good players coming up that will fit right in where we need them to play,” said Nider.
Although there is some added pressure on the team to keep their record alive, the boys are all just focused on getting comfortable with their teammates and giving their best effort at practices. These players are putting forth their best effort to prove to themselves, their teammates, and the coaches that they are worthy of their spot on the team. Liam Whalen (26) said, “I think we will have another great season this spring. I think that everyone understands what we are trying to do as a team is win another state championship.”
The first pitch of the season will be thrown on Tuesday, Mar. 11 at EHS’ home field against The Academy.
