The competitive landscape of college athletics is constantly changing, and with it, the recruitment process that influences the futures of young athletes. High school coaches, scouts, and the athletes themselves are all facing higher stakes than ever before. Recently, Gunnar Garrison, a junior at Eaton High School, made a verbal commitment to play baseball at Brigham Young University (BYU).
Garrison (26) said, “It feels like a family there; the overall community is great.” Finding a home away from home can be difficult for many people, and the connections made in sports create a brotherhood for many.
Stress can become overwhelming for many during the recruitment process. Concerns about leaving the state where individuals grew up and their family can weigh heavily on your mind. With numerous other athletes competing for the same position, feelings of doubt and uncertainty can easily take over. Garrison said, “It feels very relieving knowing I’m done and wondering if I made the right choice.”
Support systems are always a good thing to have in all aspects of life. While choosing a lifelong career choice, it is needed. Family, friends, and mentors can help alleviate anxiety throughout the whole process. They can also help keep people accountable. Garrison said, “My mom and dad are always encouraging me to make my best decisions and pushing me to be my best.”
Garrison will be pitching for BYU at a Division 1 level. This is a great accomplishment for him, for he is only a junior. He will continue to improve his skills and get stronger as the years go by. Garrison said, “I want to get better by lifting and getting stronger as well as being a better pitcher overall.”
While sports are an important part of his life, education is his priority for continuing studies. He intends to pursue either business or health fitness. Garrison said, “I want to be able to get good grades.”
As he prepares for this next chapter, Garrison will prepare to take on this experience and be the best athlete and student he can be.
