Each year, for the Eaton community, homecoming week is a highly anticipated time. It is filled with a week of traditions that unite the community. One of the traditions of Homecoming week is spirit dress up days. This year’s themes were skier vs. surfer, barbeque parent vs. sports parents, class colors, rhyme without reason, and Red’s gear. Rhyme without reason on Thursday stood out, with it being the first time it was ever used as a spirit day theme. Many students were welcomed into the building on Thursday with Mrs.Grable dressed as a football “punter” and Mr. Poland dressed as a “hunter”. Student Council member Trinity Salberg (26) said, “I think Mrs. Grable and Mr. Polland’s rhyme without reason was the best because they went all out.” Grable and Polland were not the only teachers to participate in this year’s dress-up week. The teachers’ dedication to showing school spirit helped students have the confidence to dress up too.
On Wednesday of homecoming week, the juniors and seniors participated in powder puff and power stuff; when the girls play flag football, and the boys take part in volleyball. The senior boys defeated the junior boys in volleyball, and the seniors then went against a team made up of teachers, with the teachers coming out on top. The senior girls had a quick start in the football games, as they scored the first two times they were in possession. The junior girls had a slow start, not scoring their first two times on offense. Unfortunately, the weather prevented the game from continuing. After just one quarter, the game was canceled because of lighting and rain.
Ryan Sharp (25), the student souncil student body president, had to make a quick decision, as the student council had the annual bonfire planned for after the football game. “I talked with the team captains on each team, and we decided it was best just to cancel the rest of the game. I didn’t want the bonfire to not be able to happen, so we planned to move it back since the rain was forecasted to stop,” said Sharp. Fortunately, the rain stopped, and the bonfire was able to happen later that night. It was a huge success, and many of the students were happy to end the unexpected night on a high note.
The bleachers were packed for the Homecoming football game on Friday night. There was a lot of anticipation built around the game as the Reds were looking for their first win of the season. The Reds defeated the Platte Valley Broncos 35-7. Senior Cooper Nider thinks it was a good win for the Reds, and was happy with the fan support. Nider said, “A game is so much better when it’s loud, rather than when it’s quiet.’’
Many students of Eaton High School showed out for the football game to show their support for their fellow classmates. Salberg said, “It was the most people we had ever had at a game before, and the student section was good because everyone was cheering.” The seniors leading the student section this year are passionate in making it better than it has been in years past.
The Homecoming dance also received a lot of positive feedback from the student body. Student council decorated the high school’s commons in shades of purple and blue to match the theme “Cloud Nine”. They also hired the same DJ that was at last year’s homecoming dance. The students loved the music choices by the DJ, and had a great time dancing all night long.
Student Council’s busiest week of the year was successful, and helped build memories for Eaton students that will last forever. “I like to look back when the week is over, and see how the work we put into planning was worth it,” said Salberg (26).
