With strong drive and determination, the Eaton Reds wrestling team took down the Highland Huskies 40 points to 30 Jan. 16 at the Red’s first home meet. Many of the Reds wrestlers stepped up in order to catapult their team into victory.
At the start of the match, the Reds sputtered a bit but came back with vengence. The key and crucial players for Reds who won their matches were Michael Cardona (14), Danny Thomas (14), Tanner Lewis (16), Jase Cassidy (15), Erich Russ (16), Riley Jones (14), Garrett Coalson (15), and Rusty Lohr (16).
One of the closer matches involved Reds wrestler Trevor Foos (14) against his opponent. The match was taken into several rounds, until Foos was eventually pinned down. Brady Tedesco (15) was also taken down by his opponent. Tedesco fought very hard, struggling to begin clawing and gripping every opportunity he had, to gain a leg up in the match. However, Tedesco suffered a pin and showed a lot of emotion after the match. This would later set up the tone for the intensity in the match.
One of the key seniors, Jones’ match, proved to be a very quick and easy takedown. Once the two opponents gained perspective on each other, they began brawling all out. Jones unfortunately tweaked his knee during the match when he was held in an awkward position. Jones didn’t much cater to his injury besides putting on some ice from the trainer. Bailey Jones (14), Riley’s sister, said that he looks to have just had a sprain .
On a side note, Sophomore Jamez Murano possibly played in one of his limited matches. After a difficult injury early on, Murano chose to finish out his season by competing in the night’s meet.
The Red’s next home meet will be on Thursday Jan. 23.
