As the new track season approaches, the team hopes to develop its strengths and build on past successes. According to the coach, Jaryn Guerra, the approach remains consistent each year, focusing on building a solid endurance base before gradually increasing speed as the season progresses.
“Running is unique because you have to keep doing it or you’ll kind of lose the momentum that you gain,” said Guerra. The team utilizes specialized coaching for different events, ensuring that jumpers, throwers, and distance runners all receive tailored training. The first step is to assess each athlete’s current condition and then the best path forward to help them improve as quickly as possible.
Motivation and inspiration are also key components of the team’s strategy. “Track is a little easier because each person has their own goal,” said Guerra. Celebrating personal records and setting new goals are essential to keeping the athletes motivated. Beyond individual achievements, Guerra emphasizes building a supportive and competitive team culture.
“I want us to be the best, but I also want the kids to be having a good time and enjoying themselves and feeling like they accomplished something,” said Guerra.
Last year, several athletes qualified for and placed at state in individual events. Strong returners include Brody Niswender (12), Kaylee Staudinger (12), Ryan Martinez (12), Delaney Reuter (10), Jayda Warehime (10) and Izzy Ramsey (10). Guerra expects them to return strong, accomplish their goals, and qualify for state this season. Niswender said, “I’m looking forward to competing and just showing out.” His goals include breaking all the sprint records, getting close to the long jump record, and winning at least one event at state. Niswender’s advice for new members is to “Always look up to improve yourself. The best way to get better is to look at your sophomore, junior, and seniors that have been running and do your best to run like them and run as fast as them.” He hopes to have a lasting impact in his last year on the team.
Reuter’s goals are to improve her times from last year and to participate in different meets. Her advice for new members is to “Always bring sweats, always dress warmer than you need to because it’s really easy to get cold. Have fun and work hard.”
With an all-around approach that combines endurance training, personalized coaching and a strong sense of team spirit, the track team is assured of a successful season ahead.
