Girls Basketball starts season with 3-0 victory

Jenni Jarnagin (21) prepares to pass ball

The Reds went undefeated in their three tournament games this weekend against Gunnison, Basalt, and The Academy. The Northern Colorado Roundball Classic tournament took place Nov. 29-31 and Dec. 1 on the Red’s home court

Playing against the Gunnison on Thursday night, the Reds won 40 to 32. Bailie Duncan (19)  put the most points on the board with a total of ten. Michaela Hill (19) and Nakaiya Kuskie (21) both scored eight points each to rack up 16 points for the Reds. On the other side of the ball, the girls had a total of 15 offensive rebounds, 11 defensive rebounds, and 17 steals.

This year the Reds not only have the pressure of playing against new teams, but also the doubt from other schools that this is not the year for Eaton. The Reds are starting with a young team, but they do have experience of playing together and take their personal talents onto the court. “This weekend really helped us prepare for the season,” Hill said, “Walking in, we were ranked 16th and Hernandez said that a lot of people said that this was the year for UH [University] and Res [Resurrection Christian] and not Eaton and Sterling. I think that put a fire under us and this weekend really helped us see the little talents we have now and that we can grow through the season and make that statement not true.”

The following day, the girls defeated Basalt with 59-21 score. Duncan scored 13 points including three successful three-point shots. Kuskie was right behind Duncan scoring a total of 12 points including 2 three-pointers. Sydney Booth (19) also put up 9 points on the scoreboard with three two-pointers and three three-point shots.

The Lady Reds played a strong defense with a total of 32 rebounds, 13 assists, and 18 steals, while Basalt had only 16 rebounds, 3 assists, and 10 steals. The Reds scored 14 points in the first quarter as Basalt trailed with seven points. Starting the second quarter, the Reds scored 17 points. In the last two quarters of the game, the girls totalled 11 points in the third and finished with 17 points in the last quarter while only allowing Basalt to score two points in each game.

On their final game of the tournament, Eaton had a close match, but took a win against The Academy 62-59. In the first quarter, the Reds trailed behind the Academy Wildcats nine points. In the second and third quarters, the scores stayed the same at 16-15 putting the Reds up one point.

Basketball coach, Todd Hernandez said, “Our toughest game was Saturday against the Academy.  We trailed the entire game and took our first lead with about two minutes left and were able to hold on and win.” The Reds took their chance and scored a total of 18 points in the last quarter and left the Academy behind with only 8 points scored.
