Reds capitalize win over Resurrection Christian in double overtime

Addie Randel dives on the floor to retrieve a loose ball, surrounded by Resurrection players.

In a stunning victory, the Reds overpowered Resurrection in double overtime, coming back from a 17 point deficit to win in the sixth quarter. Offense for the Reds was lacking in the second and third quarters, permeated with turnovers and missed shots. Overall, the Reds had 30 turnovers. Defense in the fourth quarter made up for the offense in the previous quarters, allowing the Reds to capitalize on steals for easy layups. Eaton outscored Resurrection 11-4 in the fourth quarter to tie the scores. Momentum also shifted when WHitley Ervin (18) took a huge charge to get the Reds possession of the ball. The first round of overtime was heated with both teams scoring five points. Eaton’s Nakaiya Kuskie (21) hit a big three pointer on the baseline, sending shockwaves through the crowd. During the second overtime, Eaton got the advantage early. Michaela Hill (19) scored a layup under the basket off of an offensive rebound, drawing a foul and making her free throw for an incredible three-point play. The Eaton bench and student section was electric as the game wound to a close with a final score of 47-42. Resurrection eventually had to foul the Reds, sending the game into double-bonus. Eaton, however only made nine shots out of 22 from the three-point line.

After scoring a big 14 points in the second quarter, the Lady Reds scoring percentages began to decrease in the third and fourth quarter which kept the Reds from capitalizing their win early. Though their scoring average went down in the second half of the game, the Reds were not going to go down without a fight. Matching five points in the first overtime with Resurrection sent the Reds into a second overtime where they scored eight points, successfully separating themselves from the Cougars.

Each person made contributions to the scoreboard, but Hill and Bailie Duncan (19) led in scoring with 11 points each. Duncan also led in steals with six, and Addie Randel (20) led in rebounds, racking up seven. Alexis Lamoreaux (18) had five blocks on the night.

Hill said, “It was one of the craziest games I have ever played. The intensity from the girls on the court to the fans in the crowd was amazing. With the help of my coaches and teammates, we knew we really needed to focus because every chance there was to score was a chance that needed to be taken.”

After the intensity of the double over time game, head coach Todd Hernandez said, “I think it should give us the confidence to know we can win a close game.” The Lady Reds have been putting in the work to prepare for the matchup at the Patriot League Championship for their chance at winning the league before heading off to state. Hernandez said, “We have just been reviewing our stats and concentrating on the fundamentals.”

Up next, the Reds will play the number one seed, Sterling, for the district title at UNC at 6:00 pm.
