Why did we just have school on MLK Jr. Day?
Martin Luther King Jr. was the man with a dream. He believed in racial equality and strived to make America a “colorblind society.” Today is the day of his birth that is celebrated across America to honor his memory and his dream. Many banks are closed, there is no mail delivery, and trash collection in Denver is delayed. However, Eaton Schools are still in session. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday. Another Federal Holiday is Presidents’ Day, on February 19, which students will have off. Why is it that a federal holiday like President’s Day means school is off but on Martin Luther King Day school is still in session? According to the Denver Post, all public schools are closed on January 15. Other schools in Northern Colorado are closed for the day such as the Greeley-Evans school district, Windsor, and Fort Collins schools. Even Highland schools are closed. Is it disrespectful to continue daily routines today rather than taking time to honor and recognize Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King is an inspiration, still to this day to all not just to black people. He refers to today as “not a black holiday; it is a people’s holiday”. The fact that his vision set the course for America’s future and how we are still on this path to an interracial and intercultural society is proof enough that this man made a difference. America still is looking for that path. Martin Luther King’s dream was to eliminate racial discrimination, although we have come so far we still have it in America. Would Martin Luther King be proud of humanity if he was still alive? Would he want us all to take off school to recognize the sacrifices he made and the dream he had? Although you may have been sitting in school today, think of Martin Luther King and the positive messages of equality and peace.
