What Happened: Eaton tennis continued its winning streak when it beat the Windsor Wizards 6-1 on April 27. Windsor is now 5-3 overall and Eaton is now 9-1 overall. The only loss for the Reds came from number one singles in a true battle in the third set.
By the Numbers: Eaton’s number one singles player Myiah Scott (17) suffered a tough loss to Windsor’s number one singles player Amanda Ward (16). Scott lost the first set 0-6, but did not give up. In fact, she came back and won 6-2. As the third set commenced, it was clear that no one was going down without a fight. Rallies were incredibly long and games went to deuce and adds more than once. The score was tied 6-6 and a tiebreaker began. Scott lost the tiebreaker 7-3, but continued to demonstrate good sportsmanship. Scott said, “Overall it was really good, and I got a lot of good shots in. My strategy in the game got better as I played. Overall I am a lot better than I was when I started and I look forward to seeing her [Ward] again in regionals.” Scott’s record is now 8-2 overall. Eaton’s number two and number three singles players Lindsey Leafgren (18) and Shelby Naill (17) continued to impress with their large margins of victory over their opponents. Leafgren won 6-3, 6-1, and Naill won 6-1, 6-1. Both girls remain undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record. Number one doubles Emily Harper (16) and Courtney Leafgren (17) continued to obliterate the competition with set scores of 6-1, 6-0. Eaton’s two doubles (Darcie Kaiser (18) and Makinsey Mawson (17)) won with score of 6-2, 6-1. Number three doubles Ashton Hall (16) and Kadie Griffith (18) had a more difficult time, but eventually beat their opponents as well in an impressive third set. Madeline Harper (19) and Abby Sears (18) won the first set 6-4 and the second set 7-5.
Down But Not Out: Eaton’s players really had to persevere throughout the matches. Scott came back and nearly won, Harper and Leafgren were in a similar situation in the beginning of the first set, and Griffith and Hall had to battle for a third set as well. Leafgren said, “We lost the first game pretty bad, and I wasn’t sure what would happen, but we came back and never lost another game and we figured it out, so that was fun.” Harper agreed and said, “I could not be more more proud of how we played today. I think attitudes were awesome and we didn’t get down at all and I think that really helped us today.” Presented with a situation like Scott’s, Griffith and Hall lost the first set 6-1, but came back and won 6-4 in the second set. In the third set, they matched the second set’s score, coming out on top.
Up Next: The Reds will take on the Sterling Tigers (5-5 overall) at Sterling on Friday, April 29. Whether the match will take place or not is questionable due to probable snowfall of one to four inches over the next few days. The match, if cancelled, would most likely be rescheduled for sometime next week.
