What Happened: The Eaton Reds vanquished the Skyline Falcons (overall 1-5, league 1-5) with a score of 7-0. In fact, Eaton’s number three singles, number one doubles, and number two doubles teams won both sets with dual scores of 6-0. This sweeping victory came after an impressive second place finish behind Holy Family at the Longmont Invitational tournament on April 15. The Reds clearly carried their momentum off of that accomplishment despite Skyline’s best efforts.
What Happened: Not only did three Eaton teams not allow their opponents to win a single game, the collective team did not allow any Skyline player or team to win over three games. The closest set was a score of 6-3, which Myiah Scott (17) won against Shelby Roberts (19). In her second set, she won 6-2. Scott said, “We got in a lot of strokes today. We had two games that went to deuce 20 times. That’s probably an exaggeration, but it was about 20. That was really fun to get in shot variety on my my approach shots, my topspin shots, and just my spin in general. It was good to get those different reps.” Among one of the teams that got two 6-0 sweeps were number one doubles partners Emily Harper (16) and Courtney Leafgren (17). So far, the dynamic duo has only lost 17 games, and has only allowed the opponent to win more than two games per match during the loss to Holy Family the first game of the season. Leafgren said, “My favorite part was just taking advantage of this opportunity and getting to work on things. Were’ implementing some new stuff and we’re going to get crazy in the next few weeks.” The Reds will continue to work on their fundamentals as the end of the season begins to approach.
Short Season Nearly Done: The tennis season spans almost all of April with no matches in the month of May. The team did practice for four weeks before the first match in April, without mandatory practices over spring break. During this time, basketball girls were finishing up their run at state. The reds only have two home matches left, and five more matches total.
Up Next: The Lady Reds will travel away to face the Frederick Warriors (2-4 overall, 0-4 league) on Thursday April 21. So far, the Warriors have won 15 matches and lost 27, making their win percentage 35.7 %. They also lost to Skyline, which was Skyline’s only win. The forecast high is set to be a scorching 80 degrees with partly cloudy skies.
