Alexa Garfinkel and her newly formed S.T.E.M. class marched toward the Eaton High School swimming pool to take on themselves in a double elimination boat race. Students were told to design a real size boat that must fit two people inside them. They then had to race to one end of the pool and back. The project was an inspiration from Garfinkel’s old high school teacher from Cherry Creek High School in Denver, CO. “He always wanted to challenge us, and did so by creating these amazing projects,” the new teacher said. The project was designed to help students understand the Archimedes Principle and the power of displacement. “The project was great, and was way different than anything I have ever done in high school so far,” Blake Miller (16) said.Miller was part of the championship trio of Miller (16), Braedy Sturdevant (18), and Cody Jordan (18). “We were down early, but we overcame adversity to come back and win it,” Jordan said. The S.T.E.M. class loved the project and gave Garfinkel friendly tips to improve the overall project.
