The Lady Reds demolished the University Bulldogs with a 58-8 victory at home on Feb. 17. Bailey Schumacher (16) bagged 12 points, while Kaci Jurgensmeier (16) and Lindy Dixon (16) snatched 9 points apiece. Jayla Jarnigan led the team with four steals. Schumacher said, “The defense played very well and we got a lot of steals which made for a lot of easy baskets. We are shooting with more confidence which hopefully carries into the postseason.” In the second-quarter, University did not score any points while the Reds earned 21.
When the Reds first played University, they beat them 61-25 on Jan. 17. Varsity Coach Todd Hernandez said, “The first time we played them we were playing our third game in five days and I think that we had some tired legs. This time around it was senior night and we were well rested, so the intensity and physical readiness were there.”
Currently, the Reds are ranked second in the Patriot League, behind Sterling. Sterling is at the opposite side of the bracket and the Reds’ only loss, which means they might not see them until the championship. The University victory was the last game of the regular season, the Reds ending with a 17-2 record. The Reds now have a clean slate to enter districts, regionals, and hopefully state. Jurgensmeier said, “We did really well in our regular season, which gives us a good position for districts, then regionals, and then state. We will go really far this year if we continue to play with the intensity and drive that we have shown on the court so far.”
