Hosting the Special Olympics this year, UNC, will welcome EHS Key Club to help organize lunches and boost the self esteem of contestants Saturday, Feb. 28. A different event is hosted each year ranging anywhere from bowling, volleyball, tennis, or basketball. Key Club has helped out the organization once before and this will be the second year helping out.
The day starts off with a huge ceremony and then as the day progresses the athletes begin their games. Excited family and volunteers start cheering on contestants from the sideline. Two years ago, during the morning Key Club volunteered to help with lunches and were able to listen to the participants excitedly speak of their accomplishments.Key Club’s president, Sam Martinez (15) said, “During lunch they show off ribbons to supportive family members and lunch volunteers.”
The event is a guaranteed full house each year, and the athletes also welcome the opportunity to participate in a sport. Martinez (15) said, “The athletes really get into it because it is one of the only sports they can compete in.” At the end of the day the athletes are happy and the support system of all the volunteers really ties it all together. Adviser Lauren Hall said, “It is an opportunity to allow students to serve the community and school.”
