The Lady Reds sustained their seven game winning streak with a victory over Brush 50-37 on Jan. 9. Bailey Schumacher (16) led the team with 14 points while Jayla Jarnagin (15) grabbed 8 points and Caiden Rexius (16) bagged 7. Emily Willier (15) led with 7 offensive and defensive rebounds, and Jarnagin also led the team with 9 steals. She said, “Three of Brush’s starters were 6 feet tall, but we didn’t let them intimidate us. We set the tempo for the game and we played very well.” The Reds played consistently throughout the game, and maintained a comfortable lead in each quarter by keeping a fast pace to equal out Brush’s height advantage. Rexius said, “We were consistent. We keep getting better as a team and better at running the plays. We have a lot more chemistry as a team now.” Although the Reds concluded with a 13-point lead, the first-quarter score was 16-5 Eaton, followed by 34-21 in the second-quarter and 39-25 in the third-quarter. Varsity Coach Todd Hernandez said, “I thought we were in control of the Brush game from start to finish. We also did a nice job pressuring their guards and didn’t allow them to really get into their offense.” So far, the Reds’ season record is 7-1, with only one loss to Sterling in the season opener. They will play Platte Valley at Kersey on Jan. 13. Jarnagin said, “Platte Valley is our biggest rival, but we need to keep our winning streak.” As rivals, the Reds will face some challenges at Kersey. Rexius said, “Platte Valley is very scrappy and aggressive. We need to stay calm and not panic.”
