Sixteen Key Club members gathered in the commons Thursday night, Oct. 29, to go trick-or-treating in the community for the Eliminate Project to earn their first banner patch. The club went door to door around Eaton asking for loose change and any other money community members would donate for the Key Club partnership with UNICEF. Liza Nelson (17), a first-year member of Key Club, said, “I loved seeing people help the cause, and I got to have fun with other Key Clubbers while doing it.” The Key Club raised $246 in dollar bills and checks alone, loose change still has not been counted. Money raised Thursday night was added to funds raised throughout the week from the bake sale for a grand total of $636.04. Lauren Hall, Key Club adviser, said the bake sale generated about $330 over all four days. The success of the fundraiser has come as a surprise. Samantha Martinez (15), Key Club president, said, “It definitely turned out better than expected. I was expecting $10 to $20 from each group, so about $70, but we far exceeded that.” Likewise, Hall said, “It was a huge success, it was way more than I thought.” At the District Convention in the spring, the Key Club will present the money to UNICEF’s Eliminate Project. Clubs that raise more than $250 will receive a special banner patch according to the Key Club website (keyclub.org).
