In the final week of October, Key Club has begun their annual bake sale. During enrichment and advising each day of the week except Monday, the club sells baked goods to raise money for UNICEF. Students are selling baked goods such as cupcakes, cookies, and puppy chow. UNICEF advocates internationally for the rights of children and promotes girls’ education and HIV/AIDS awareness while helping protect children against diseases. Baked goods range from fifty cents to a dollar and all money goes toward the efforts of UNICEF’s Eliminate Project. The Eliminate Project is a partnership of UNICEF with Key Club International to raise money for neonatal tetanus shots for women in Africa. The project hopes to raise $110 million dollars by the end of 2015. To raise money, students involved in key club across the United States will be active the entire week of Halloween. Key club president, Samantha Martinez (15), estimates that in two days of fundraising, the club has raised about $150. Martinez said, “It’s our duty as human beings to help those who have less.” The club will be participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF on Thursday, Oct. 30. Members will dress up in costume and go from door to door in the community asking for money to be donated to the Eliminate Project. On Friday, students can expect to have deals on the baked goods from the bake sale.
