With every ring of the early-morning bell and the buzz in the hallway quieting down, stress levels are prone to the demanding nature of everyday school schedules. Sure, it may be a new day, but the burden of the hours to come can, at times, be very overwhelming. New challenges arise and although some are rather minute, some can be very trying. Students are an increasingly common victim of stress, and it is important to first know the detrimental effects, and then know how to prevent them.
Extreme levels of stress have been known to create a sense of depression and have been linked to a lack of sleep, motivation; and are closely related to anxiety, migraines, heart palpitations and insomnia. Individuals may also suffer from increased or decreased appetite, mood swings, heart burn, social withdrawal as well as the development of nervous habits and compulsive behavior.
With all of its unhealthy side effects, stress has become a danger that students must know how to fight. In the coming months, it may be crucial to consider techniques that would act to relieve stress and keep healthy habits on track.
Some experts consider basic changes such as making an effort to eat right and exercise to be effective, but those are not the only methods. For many, having a positive outlook when faced with pressing situations is somewhat impossible. But certain things like simply making an attempt to smile more and having an “anything can be conquered” attitude can help push through even the most difficult of days.
Experts in stress relief, however, do encourage avoiding competitive atmospheres, silencing cell phones at night, taking short breaks from work, surrounding yourself with positive people and even trying yoga!
Also, time management is key. Take out enough time in the day for normal activities, chores, and even just time to sit and relax, but don’t forget to keep priorities in mind. When completing homework, what is most important should always be done first, but don’t put off little assignments. They still count!
So with the coming school year, stay motivated and keep a smile on you face. Seek help when things become too overwhelming and bring a positive attitude to every task.
Now, take a deep breath… feel better?
