Marching triumphantly onto the Eaton High School football field, the school marching band played the halftime show of the first home varsity football game on Friday, Aug. 29. Alongside new freshman and veteran upperclassman members, Director Logan Doddridge made the decision to add a rock combo to the mix.The rock combo, consisting of an electric guitar, electric bass, electric keyboard, and drum set, is a concept foreign to traditional marching band instructors.
Doddridge says “I’ve taken a couple of ideas from other marching bands, but I’ve never heard of or done anything quite like [the rock combo] before.”
After an early summer band camp, a two-week long hardcore camp, and various sectionals, the band learned four songs, and performed “I’m a Man” and “Saturday In The Park” by Chicago at the halftime show on Friday. Preceding the varsity game on August 29, the marching band also played its two-song set at the back-to-school assembly on Tuesday, August 19.
Incoming freshmen were welcomed by loud music as it resonated from the horns, drums, and electric instrument amplifiers. As for the remainder of the season, the band has the ultimate goal of going on to the state level championship.
The marching band hopes to continue improving its set by means of rehearsals at seven in the morning, occasional Saturday morning rehearsals, and performances at Eaton’s home football games.
