Snow, lights, and trees, the time to be jolly is here. As the season of Christmas rolls around, so does one of the most anticipated Eaton High School festivities. The door decorating competition is always such a blast, and teachers and students alike look forward to it. All advising classes, freshmen to seniors, take time in their short advising period in order to make festive decorations on their doors and around their entryways. After a few weeks of decorating, the final judging happens during finals week, and the best-looking door for each grade is crowned the winner. And it’s not just the bragging rights the winning class gets, but they also get awarded a hot chocolate party during advising. Freshmen winners are Dr Adam’s advising class, and sophomore’s winner is Mrs. Lanning.
Guerra’s advising class of 2026 always has amazing doors. They’ve won once again, making the class three-time champions. Their door this year was very creative, with a hanging wall to mimic a gingerbread house and a window looking in on a cozy fireplace. Their design was very stylish, and definitely deserved to win.
Language Arts teachers seem to crush the door decorating competitions. Another advising class winner of the competition was Mrs. Sorenson, who continuously crushes her competitors. Also being a three time in a row champion, this year, she and her advising class really went all out, decorating not just their door, but also a nearby conference room door and all along the hallway.
Sorenson said, “It’s a great bonding experience for my advising class. It brings us closer and gives us something to unite and work at.” Sorenson values this contest because it is a fun opportunity for her and her advisors to grow closer. “I think it is important for the high school to put on these friendly competitions, especially closer to the end of the semester. Everyone’s stressed, tired, and fried, so a little friendly competition gives us something to get excited for when we’re running a little bit low,” she said. Sorenson is very proud of her crew, and she appreciates all their effort in helping decorate. “I’m very proud of my Advising class. It’s very small, and looking at the roster you wouldn’t expect us to win, yet we do,” Sorenson said.
The door decorating competition is always a highlight of the holiday times and brightens up the last few stressful weeks. It acts as a fun event to ease up students as finals roll around. Little festivities and Eaton traditions like this always spice up the school year and give the student body something to look forward to. Friendly competition is a staple of Eaton High School, especially since Eaton is a town gifted at sports. The door decorating contest truly is a delightful activity, and surely has the student body and staff counting down the days until next year’s competition.
