Volunteering is a very important subject, especially around the holidays. It contributes to helping people in need, gives community support, personal growth, a sense of fulfillment, and overall improves the society. With this, it can also strengthen community bonds, improve public services, give your economy benefits, and set a positive aspect in your environment. It plays a crucial role in building and maintaining strong, resilient communities.
In Colorado, there are multiple volunteering opportunities open to the public. In a semester-long course at EHS called Ethical Leadership, you are taught about the importance of being a good team leader, having good values and mindsets, self-image, social networking, and positives about volunteerism. In the 2024-2025 school year, EHS teacher Mr. Adams taught the first semester of this school year. The class usually consists of freshmen to seniors so there are different age groups all working together. Emi Fulton, a student of the class this semester said, “Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community! It’s a way to show a love for the place that can give you so much! I volunteered at a nursing home in Greeley and it was a great experience. I learned patience and compassion for people who were just happy to have visitors. It was very cool to see their faces light up when we were playing games. In the class, I learned how to improve speeches using rubrics and more about being a good leader to my community.” Most of the students in the class excelled and reflected on their self-actions by learning more about the importance of being a leader.
In the EHS ethical leadership class, students had a service learning project for their final. The classwork before their final taught them how to achieve their goals while completing the project. Most groups chose to do community service while others chose to try and make an impact on people’s choices and aspects. Another student in the class, Josie Naill says “To me the importance of volunteerism is that it can build trust within a community and build strong connections in general. I have volunteered various times like for vacation bible school for my ethical leadership class and more. All these experiences have taught me that the smallest things can make a big impact on someone. Something that will always stick with me from my class is that it’s the small things that you do that can make large impacts in communities and lives.” The class has taught various students the importance of volunteering and more that will stick with the students for a long time.
Overall, Volunteering is something a human should be very passionate about doing. It can help many other people out in the community and world and in general help to support others and give yourself personal growth.
