The holidays are coming around the corner, and people are shopping until they drop. The highly anticipated days called Black Friday and Cyber Monday are coming up. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, and it’s known for the crazy sales, and people lining up before stores open to get their hands on items. Sales can be all the way up to 60% off of the whole store, buy one get one free, and other significant discounts. Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving, and it is full of online discounts on technology, clothes, and more. Because the sales are online, buyers can purchase items from the comfort of their house.
Black Friday includes people going into the store to buy the items that may be wanted or needed. Even though Black Friday is supposed to be an in-person event, there are still sales on store’s online websites that are labeled “Black Friday”. Black Friday is the same thing as Cyber Monday, just advertised as a name well known to make people excited. Bartel said, “Black Friday is a name everyone looks for and most people don’t really know what Cyber Monday is.”
Black Friday’s name dates back to the 1950s. The History Channel reports it was used by Philadelphia police to describe the chaos that often took place in the city the day after Thanksgiving. Christopher Love, a business teacher at the Eaton High School, said,“Black Friday is when stores are popping into the black, in accounting terms. It marks the point when stores are moving into the black, profiting, rather than in the red where they are losing money.”
According to Coastal Breeze News, Cyber Monday got its official name from the National Retail Federation. Last year in 2023, 73 million people shopped online on the traditional Cyber Monday. A large number of people have agreed that Cyber Monday is the better option to participate in, out of the two. Raelynn Bartel (26) said, “Cyber Monday is way better, because I like to be online and not actually have to go into the store to buy something.”
Cyber Monday is two days after Black Friday, and it’s held to grab all the things people didn’t get their hands on in store. One great advantage to shopping online is that there are no lines that wrap around the store that people have to wait in.
Both Black Friday and Cyber Monday are huge traditional holiday shopping days held in the United States. The majority of people enjoy sitting on their couch during Cyber Monday, rather than getting out of their houses to shop on Black Friday. No matter what shopping preference a person has, deals are guaranteed.
