Eaton High Schools’’ volleyball team has yet to lose a game during this season. They have faced seven teams so far, and have proven that their practice and determination is paying off. Matt Meagher, the new head coach of the team, has started his new role with a good reputation. Receiving new coaching styles can be a good tactic for a team, and this team seems to be absorbing every bit of the new coaching. Callie Moos (25) said, “The culture of the team has changed immensely, for the better, through the new coaching staff.” The girls have taken this fresh start to establish themselves as the team to beat.
Lila DeJager (26), setter for the team, said, “I think that part of the reason we have done so well so far this season is because of the good leadership and the role models that we have on the court.” There are six seniors part of the team that take it upon themselves to set a high standard of positive behavior, and encouraging culture amongst the volleyball court.
The seniors on the team have played through seasons with different kinds of leadership, and different coaching styles, which has only motivated them to set a positive example for the underclassmen. Moos said, “As an individual, I am doing everything I can to be selfless, putting my teammates first, encouraging them, and being the mentor they need in every aspect, including outside of volleyball.” The players on the team, no matter the grade, make sure that they do not lose sight of the fun of the sport to remain in touch with the importance of the activity.
The Reds started off their season facing 4A Windsor High School, and won the game 3-1. As it was their first game as a team, they had a few rocky points and even lost a set. The team found their mental strength to regroup and restore their drive to win the game. After the match-up against Windsor, they have been able to continue the same mentality throughout the ongoing season.
Thirteen games remain in the regular season for the girls to continue their winning streak into the State Championship and hopefully walk away with a state title. According to MaxPreps, they are currently first in the volleyball standings for 3A, and have the potential to continue that status.
