The homecoming spirit has always been something to look forward to during the beginning of the school year. This is a time that the whole school collectively comes together to raise the spirits during the week before the homecoming dance. A tradition for years has been to take a week and dress up everyday for different themes. This year’s themes were surf versus snowboard, BBQ parent versus sport parent, monochromatic, rhyme without reason, and Reds gear.
The importance of the week is seen within some of the few students who participated. Emma Roberts (11) said, “Spirit week shows how we are all a community and is a fun way to show school spirit by being yourself.” Students find it fun to build relationships and share laughs during this week by showing their true self. Some of these students might struggle being comfortable with themselves, but when the whole school participates it becomes just a little bit easier.
The attention has been fixated on the amount of students that did not participate. Andrew Loyd (11) said, “Honestly this year I didn’t participate because the themes were repetitive.” Many complaints had the same reasoning for not participating. Having the same themes as the year before have caused the students to not want to repeat outfits and to get bored of seeing the same ideas.
From the information that has been collected the student body should come together to help get everyone involved. The themes should be changed and never repeat the year before to bring excitement and curiosity to what will be worn. Homecoming spirit is shared throughout the whole community. Let’s not close this chapter and keep bringing people together!
