After a grueling six-game series, the Houston Astros defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 and won the 2022 World Series. 

The 2022 MLB playoffs began on Oct. 7 with the wildcard series. The National League (NL) started with a series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals, and a series between the San Diego Padres and the New York Mets. San Diego advanced in the NL West and Philadelphia advanced in the East.

The Tampa Bay Rays and Cleveland Guardians played the American League (AL) East wildcard series, and the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners played the AL West wildcard series. Seattle and Cleveland advanced to the division series.

The Phillies took a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East division series, and the Padres won their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1.

The Guardians lost the AL East series against the New York Yankees with a series score of 3-2. In the West, Seattle got swept by the Houston Astros 3-0. 

Junior Alex Williams said, “I wanted the Yankees to win this year because Aaron Judge had a great year and it would be great to have a win.”

The American League Championship Series (NLCS) between Houston and New York resulted in another sweep for Houston in the seven-game series. The Phillies had a similar series in the NLCS against San Diego, winning the series 4-1.

The 2022 World Series kicked off on Friday, Oct. 28, when Philadelphia took the lead with a 6-5 victory in game one. Game two tied up the series with Houston’s 5-2 victory. Game three gave Philadelphia the lead with a 7-0 win, bringing the series to 2-1. The Astros once again tied up the series winning game four 5-0. The Phillies took a close 3-2 loss in game five bringing the series score to 3-2 with Houston. The Astros were one game away from another World Series title. In game six, the Astros defeated the Phillies 4-1 and took home the World Series trophy yet again.

Junior Lucas Stone said, “I definitely wanted the Phillies to win because I’ve enjoyed watching Bryce Harper and I haven’t liked the Astros after what happened a couple of years back.”

The Astros won a previous World Series in 2017, but a sign-stealing scandal overshadowed it. But now, in 2022, they won the series again, fair and square.
