Stepping out in style
Met Gala 2022 was filled with extravagant outfits that fit the theme, In America: An Anthology of Fashion
Celebrities and prominent public figures stepped out in “gilded glamor” at the Met Gala. The event is hosted on the first Monday in May and has become an annual celebration of fashion. The Gala is a charity event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and signifies the opening of the Costume Institute exhibit. The event usually welcomes around 600 attendees and this year was hosted by celebrity co-chairs Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour from Vogue were honorary co-chair hosts.
Setting the tone for the evening, Blake Lively emerged in a gleaming copper Versace dress swathed in a copper silk that unfolded into a teal train that was embroidered with the constellations of Grand Central Terminal. “I think Blake Lively had the best outfit for the Met Gala, hers was the most unique and it was super colorful,” said Davanie Korgan (23). Along with her gown, Lively also wore magical gloves and a tiara similar to the one the Statue of Liberty has. Her husband and co-host, Ryan Reynolds, stood beside her in a simple black suit with a white dress shirt and vest.
Alicia Keys was inspired by New York City as well. Keys wore a Ralph Lauren cape studded with diamonds that formed the silhouettes of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. The glamor didn’t stop with Lively and Keys; female rappers such as Megan thee Stallion and Cardi B dressed in gilded glamor. Stallion wore Moschino feathers and a brocade and Cardi B was decked out in golden Versace chains and jewelry. Other music artists such as Billie Eilish and Dove Cameron stayed away from elaborate outfits and chose to show up in gilded age dresses instead of glamorous gild. Eilish wore a corseted cream dress with sheer pistachio-colored sleeves and a purple flower. Cameron wore a delicate, skeletal gown by Iris van Herpen that had intricate cutouts and crazy structural details. “I thought Dove Cameron or Billie Eilish had the best Met Gala look because they were actually on theme,” said junior Autumn Hockley. Being the last to arrive, Kim Kardashian ended the night in Marilyn Monroe’s original sheer sparkly dress that was worn when Monroe sang “Happy Birthday” to JFK in 1962. The Met Gala always celebrates fashion and leaves watchers in awe of some attendees’ wardrobe choices.
