The talent show— an Eaton High School tradition— has been canceled for the first time in at least ten years. The talent show was appointed for April 13. Due to problems within student council, however, the show must not go on, so to speak. Amy Irwin, student council sponsor, said, “We had some miscommunications and some deadlines that weren’t met, so we had to cancel it.”
Dalton Shoop (13), who was in charge of the talent show, said, “There were miscommunications between everyone involved in it— between myself and Mrs. Irwin and the administration department— about dates. The whole time schedule was off.”
Shoop said he felt bad about the incident. He said, “It’s a sore subject.” Although initially saying the incident was no one’s fault in particular, he later said, “I would take the blame on that if I had to. I was in charge of it and I messed up.”
Shoop initially denied any involvement of underclassman, Ty Gavette (14), in the talent show. Shoop later said, “He [Gavette] was partially involved in it, but he didn’t have anything to do with the events or the date planning; he was just going to MC.”
The rehearsal that was set up for potential acts turned out to be a bust. Irwin said they didn’t technically have rehearsal. Only one act, Maija Rae Brown (15), showed up for the rehearsal. People did not turn the required paperwork in on time. Irwin said, “The tech department put so much time and effort into all the technology, and they made a form for us and were very diligent. We don’t want to ask them to do more than they’ve already done.”
After the deadline, eight acts signed up for the talent show which Irwin said “was a bummer.” Irwin Said, “It was a very hard decision but there were so many people involved we had to follow through and do what we say we’re going to do and meet the deadline.”
Shoop said, “I apologize for it and promise to make twice as good a show next year.”
