FCCLA earned over $310 during it’s Kaps for Kids day. All the proceeds went to help US Submarine Veterans raise money for the Ronald McDonald Charity. Mrs. Irwin wanted FCCLA’s charity event to be a Kaps for Kids fundraiser. She was inspired, because Ms. Irwin’s dad in an Honary US Submarine. Students were encouraged to donate a dollar to wear a hat on Feb 10 as they walked into the front doors. Haley Morrell (13) said, “It was cool, because you could tell who did donate and who didn’t.” A few students who forgot a hat still donated money to the US Submarine Veterans, so they could buy hats for kids fighting their lives at hospitals. “They should have done better with advertising, because I didn’t even know,” said Alejandra Najera. FCCLA was also doing side fundraisers for the past couple of weeks. Students involved in the orginization, carried around bags of candy to classes to sell to students and teachers. People had the choice of buying gum, pixie sticks, twizzlers, and chocolate. To contribute to the fundraising, students were encouraged to buy singing valagrams for someone special. On Valentine’s Day, students bought their friends, crush’s, and boyfriends a singing valagram. Valagram’s were two dollars and were delivered to that special person during class on Feb 14. The boy’s choir delivered a song to the girl’s and the girl’s choir sang to the boys. Kailey Kaiser (12) said, “The student body and staff did such a wonderful job participation and supporting this organization.” All proceeds from Kaps for Kids Day, the candy, and singing valagrams were donated to the US Submarine Veterans. The Sub Vets use all the donations to buy kids hats with life-threatening illness’. They give them a certificate and hat to make them an honary submarine.
According to the Ronald McDonald House website, the houses in Denver have offered a home for the families in need to be close to their sick children being treated in nearby hospitals for thirty years. More and more children who are in need of emergency treatment are being transferred to Denver hospitals from the rural areas of Colorado for the expert medical care provided. The Ronald McDonald House provides comfort to children who don’t want to face their tragic experience in hospitals alone. The Ronald McDonald House is a homey hospital for kids. They also have a summer camp for children who have or who have had cancer, and give out college scholarships to high schoolers and local community grants. One of the metropolis area houses are 76,000 square feet and holds a capacity of 45 families a night. The success of this charity has caused expansion of the charity to 52 regions and countries. Ronald McDonald aims to represent a happy and a fun outlook on life. Even the McDonald restaurants help support the non-profit organization. Families must live at least 60 miles outside of Denver and can’t have anymore than two children under the age of 18 years who wish to accompany their parents at the house. The Ronald McDonald house never turns away any families due to cost. However, the charity recommends a 20 dollar donation. This charity has also gone mobile, bringing medical and dental examination rooms to people in need.
Ronald McDonald Charities encourage people to help the cause with donations, volunteering, fundraising, and sponsors. Sub Vets visit kids with life-threatening illnesses at Ronald McDonald houses and bring them honory submariner hats. Sub Vets hope to put a smile on kids faces for a while and take their minds of their medical problem. US Submarine Veterans are Active, Retired, Reserve, or a Veteran members of the underseas fighting force of the United States Navy. Kaps for Kids is a community outreach program that makes kids and the Sub vets who visit them happy. A positive local awareness for the United States Submarine Veterans is provided by the Kaps for Kids charity.
