Reds start season strong with win over Highland
Lady Reds roll over the Huskies
Lady Reds basketball is starting off the season strong. They defeated the Highland Huskies 61-22. The reds held the Huskies to just two points in the first quarter, when they scored 22. Ahana Leffler (22) said, “I think it’s a good first step into our season.”
The Reds, led by senior Nakaiya Kuskie (21) took an early lead and didn’t look back after. Kuskie said, “I think the big win fuels us even more. The girls and I were super pumped after a win like Tuesdays.” Kuskie led the team in scoring with 18 points, she shot 50% from three going 6 for 12. Kuskie said, “It always feels nice to put up big numbers while scoring, but I could not do any of it without the way my teammates swung the ball.”
Ahana Leffler (22) also had a big night with 12 points, she shot 2 for 4 from three making her 50% as well, Leffler also led the team in steals with five, along with two assists. Leffler said, “Leading the team in steals feels great, and it feels good knowing that I helped my team gain momentum.”
Abiah Randel (23), led the team in rebounds with 8, followed by Jenni Jarnagin (21) with 7.
“I think a win like this gives our team confidence,” Kuskie said. The Reds rolled over the Huskies, and will look to take that moment into the rest of the season.
Kuskie said, “It was a great opportunity to get back in the flow of things and figure out how we play with each other.”
Friday, January 26, the Reds will take the road to Sterling to take on the Tigers.
