Volleyball wins against University on the road
After a tough loss in set one, the Reds won the last three sets for a win against their long time rivals the University Bulldogs. Wednesday night Oct. 9, the Eaton Reds Volleyball team snatched a win in four sets to their biggest rivals, in a “blacked-out” gym.
The team didn’t start off strong in the first set, taking a 15-25 loss, but the Reds defense stepped up in the last three sets. Led by Delaney Ochsner (21) with 25 digs and Kynna Gentry (21) with 24, the Reds had a total of 113 digs. Gentry said, “For us, a rivalry or not, that was a big momentum changer for the rest of the season and the better matchups we have coming up.” The Reds defense took them to a set two win 25-16. Andie Anderson (20) also lent a big contribution on the defensive side with 20 digs and offensively with 44 assists, as did Sydney Leffler (21), racking up 15 of the team’s 54 kills.
Another huge role on the offensive end was Abbey Hays (21) who led the team with 17 kills with. Hays said, “When we had a meeting before the game we talked about how we have been playing individually. It was a very player-led meeting and we all inputted what we thought we needed to change, and we really saw those changes going into the game and it helped us win.”
The girls took set three and four in two closer games, 25-18 and 25-21. Gentry said, “We all know what we want in the end and it’s the little steps and big wins like that one that are going to get us there.” The Girls will continue their season with their next game at home against the 7-5 Valley Vikings.
