Former Eaton football player Mitch Unrein made the Denver Broncos 53 man roster. Unrein is the first Eaton High School athlete to compete at this level of athletics. Unrein is currently second at right defensive tackle on the depth chart behind Kevin Vickerson, meaning he will likely see playing time.
Stephen Strasburg made his first MLB start after having the infamous ‘Tommy John’ surgery. He threw five scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. The Yankees are back on top of the heated American League East race, sitting two games ahead of Boston. The Arizona Diamondbacks have taken a commanding lead over the defending world champion San Francisco Giants in the National League West.
In College Football, LSU won the game of the weekend againstOregon. Winning this game allowed the Tigers to jump to number two in the national standings. Even after a late comeback win against Utah State,Auburn dropped out of the top 25. Other impressive wins include Baylor over TCU, South Florida beating Notre Dame, and Boise rolling over Georgia. In local college football, CSU edged out a 14-10 win againstNew Mexico. UNC had trouble against Lindenwood. Former Eaton Quarterback, Seth Lobato, went down with a concussion during the game, leaving with 97 passing yards and a touchdown. Lindewood, an NAIA team in the process of transitioning to Division-II, won the game 22-20.
With the NFL season about to start, fans still have one question. Will Peyton Manning play on opening day? Manning underwent a neck surgery this offseason and is now looking at missing substantial playing time. Could this be the end of Manning’s streak? Will Manning play a game this season? Will he ever play in the NFL again? With Manning not practicing and unable to throw a football these questions are all legitimate concerns. With week 1 quickly approaching it is safe to assume that Kerry Collins will be the starting quarterback for the Colts.
