Colorado Schools Lack Air Conditioning

High temps in schools cause students to lose energy and focus

For the past month, since the start of school, indoor temperatures in Colorado schools are reaching 90 degrees, causing students to lose focus and energy. On Monday Aug. 19, according to the Denver Post, over 60 schools in Denver lack air conditioning causing staff and students to find creative solutions to keep the classrooms cooler. Teachers are buying and bringing in their own air conditioners, swamp coolers, and fans from home to try and bring comfort into the classrooms. A group of teachers, faculty, students and parents gathered in front of Denver Public Schools Monday evening to demand relief for students and staff who are struggling to focus due to the high temperatures. Protesters say that these conditions are unhealthy and dangerous. Some schools are now scheduled to receive air conditioning in 2020.

Denver isn’t the only town that has schools lacking air conditioning in Colorado. The town of Eaton also has schools that lack air conditioning. Eaton High School lacks air conditioning in every classroom. The only part of the school that has air conditioning is the newer part, and recently hasn’t been working properly. Teachers are taking their students out of their classrooms to take them to areas in the school that have air conditioning, so they can gather their focus again. Due to the lack of air conditioning and need of renovations, Eaton School administration is trying to pass a bond that allows a new high school to be built. They also plan to use the bond to put air conditioning into the current high school, which according to the plan would be the middle school; so students can be more engaged and focused in classes.
