With a growing population, the issue of how the United States will be able to support such a vast amount of people has become a national concern. With the population of the U.S. being just above 307 million right now, how will our society be able to sustain itself with so many people? Especially with the world population going from 7 Billion to 9 Billion. This is just way too many people. By the year 2050, the United States population is projected to dramatically increase to 392 million people.
Mr Kinney, math teacher, said that there would be “no reason to reduce the number of Americans to only have confidence in finance.” However, the over-population will cause a lack of jobs, necessities, and living space. At some point in time, America will have a higher demand of things than Americans are capable of supplying. How can this expected chaos be brushed off America’s shoulder? Well, one way to fix this train wreck is to stop having children. The population growth can simply be stopped by not having kids. With the fertility rate of America being at 2.12 in 2007, the population is at a steady incline. The replacement fertility rate is 2 births per woman, which means if every married couple has two kids the population will stay the same– the number of people born will be the same as those who have died. If people who cannot afford their children get subsidized to not have children, then this would kill two birds with one stone. On one hand it will help the population because people are getting paid to not have children, and on the other, people who cannot afford children will be paid to refrain themselves from doing so. Mrs. Lowndes, business teacher, said that it would be better to “pay families to not have kids because welfare does not really have any rules regulating how the money is spent.”
Mr. Kinney, said that it is an American’s “personal responsibility to decide how many kids they have.” Kinney said he believes that “parents should be able to have the choice of how many kids they have based on their current financial situations.”
In the end, a growth of population in the United States will not end well. People will have to control how many kids they have and this can not be stopped unless the government implements a law declaring how many kids Americans can have. Either that or parents will have to be aware of their financially stability and whether or not it is good enough to have a child. In the long run, parents need to control how many kids they have based on their current financial situation. If parents do not have enough money to have kids then they should not have them. It should not be the ease of a check in the mail to have a child.
