As the summer months rolled on, radios blasted dozens of jams that made those hot days fly by. A selected few were just so great they had to be mentioned in a magical list. Enjoy, fellow kiddies.
Foster the People—Pumped Up Kicks: Incredibly catchy and fun, this new song hit the mainstream this summer thanks in part to stations such as Channel 9.33 and 9.73 KBCO. Sounding a lot like Peter, Bjorn and John’s Young Folks, Pumped Up Kicks is actually about a homicidal teenage boy. With lyrics mentioning “outrun my gun” and “run faster than my bullet.” Cool!
Gym Class Heroes—Stereo Hearts featuring Adam Lavine: A not-so-typical love song featuring Maroon 5’s front man made its way to radio waves recently. Stereo Hearts is sweet and likable for many people. Although if Travie McCoy asked me to scratch his back, I don’t think I could manage that…maybe if it was Matthew Mcconaughey asking, then for sure!
Katy Perry—Last Friday Night (TGIF): Katy Perry at her finest released this summer song explaining just how crazy last Friday night was even if people don’t remember it come Saturday! Last Friday Night rambles on about the insane—sometimes illegal—events due to partying too hard including dancing on tabletops, skinny dipping in the dark and maxing out credit cards. Yay for Friday nights!
Jason Derulo—Don’t Wanna Go Home: Ah, Jason Derulo…so talented. Derulo is known for remaking old school songs and making them sound brilliant-er. This remake is of “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” by Harry Belafonte and, “Show Me Love” by Robin S. If Jason Derulo sang a song to me, I wouldn’t want to go home either.
Britney Spears—I Wanna Go: It might be safe to safe to say that Britney Spears will never retire. This girl releases new music every month, it seems, which is okay because this song is one to party to. She was recently honored at the MTV Video Music Awards with the “Video Vanguard Award” award.
DJ Khaled—I’m On One featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne: Whatever drugs this song is talking about, it’s still bomb. “Drizzy” lays it down in the first verse and chorus, then DJ Khaled puts in his two cents, and finally Lil’ Wayne with the third verse. Though I’m still unsure of what “being on one” means, the song remains enjoyable.
IYAZ—Pretty Girls featuring Travie McCoy: According to this song, “there’s a lot of pretty girls in this city,” which is up to interpretation for the guys in Eaton. Teehee. Once again, IYAZ released a stuck-in-your-head-all-day kind of song. Mentioned previously in the list, Travie McCoy finds himself in this jam serenading women for a second time.
Empire of the Sun—Walking on a Dream: Alright, alright, alright, so Walking on a Dream came out about two years ago, but until the movie Hall Pass came out, nobody really knew about Empire of the Sun. This MGMT-esque band has trippy videos, but great music. They rocked my summer, so for sure check it out.
New Boyz—Better With the Lights Off: Okay, so the lyrics state, “I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but you look better with the lights off.” Pssh, of course we take that the wrong way! Nonetheless, the song is still dance-worthy. Just don’t sing it to any girl, or things *wink, wink* will be hitting the fan.
Wiz Khalifa—No Sleep: The mastermind—well, the singer—behind Black and Yellow released his first album last March entitled “Rolling Papers.” Classy. From the album, No Sleep soon became quite popular. All about “living it up like it’s the weekend,” Khalifa’s point became clear that he likes to party. Maybe Wiz Khalifa and Katy Perry should collaborate on some song about not sleeping and partying last Friday night. Think about it.
Plus, an insane amount of dubstep.
